SmartLipo™ is gaining popularity as a way for people to lose weight when normal diet and exercise do not work. One of the benefits is that it is a precise procedure that is laser-assisted. It is designed to produce a minimal amount of trauma to the body. This leads to quicker recovery time and less downtime.
With traditional liposuction, a surgeon can manually breakup fat deposits. This causes bruising, bleeding, and trauma to the area that is being treated. SmartLipo™ uses a laser that liquefies the fat, making it very easy for doctors to suction it out.
SmartLipo™ can be performed on a patient while they are awake, and the patient will only have minimal discomfort.
SmartLipo™ has been popular in Europe and in South America for about a decade. It was not until 2007 that the procedure became approved by the FDA for use in the United States.
What to expect from a SmartLipo™ Procedure
Prior to the procedure, you will have a consultation with the surgeon who will perform the treatment. They will review your current health, health history, and the goals you have for liposuction. They will then sit down with you and lay out a blueprint for how the procedure will be performed. The surgeon will mark the areas that will be treated.
An anesthetic will be used. The surgeon will then take a laser fiber and insert it into a small tube. The tube will be inserted underneath your skin through a very small incision that the surgeon will make. It will be just big enough for the tube to pass through. The laser will melt the fat deposits, and these will be sucked out of your body.
Since the laser causes blood vessels to coagulate immediately, bleeding, swelling, and bruising is drastically reduced. Additionally, the laser that is used to melt the fat may cause your skin to produce collagen. This in turn will cause your skin to tighten and shrink.
It may take a few weeks for this shrinking of the skin to become apparent, but it is an essential part in producing a smooth final product.
SmartLipo™ can be used anywhere in the body that traditional liposuction can be done. It may also be used in some areas where traditional liposuction cannot reach because of how small the tube is. These include areas in the neck, knees, arm, and stomach.
